This is a brand new first of its kind workshop dedicated to the art of masking tape design and creating original and eye-catching designs specifically for furniture.
I have on occasion been called the Queen of Masking Tape ;) so it seems only right that after 3 plus years of working out and refining my techniques and style, I'm finally giving you behind-the-scenes access and inner workings of how I do what I do!
I really want you to enjoy creating original, unique designs just as much as I do so this is what this course is all about.
This workshop will focus on designing striking, cool but balanced and considered designs largely for furniture. However hand-created geometric designs work equally as well for personalising other areas of interiors too, such as walls, ornaments & fabrics.
As well as looking at the different types of Masking Tape Designs, from simple to complex – bold to fine line, I will go through the real-time development of one of my drinks cabinet designs from scratch!
You can come with me on the journey as I take it literally from a vintage piece and plan out and create the design specifically for it.
I'll show you how I make the designs work for the individual pieces and create the mock ups I present to clients to help visualise design work before sitting down to apply any tape.
What will you get from my Masterclass?
You will learn how to create unique, original geometric designs to really elevate your furniture designs
You will find out how to develop and plan your own designs visually
You will be learn about different masking tape design methods and get to practice by creating four of my distinctive styles of geometric designs, each using a different technique, before learning how to develop one of your own.
You get all my techniques and key tips to ensure you get a perfect clean, smooth high quality result when applying and painting your designs
You’ll know the best products and tools to use in the process and the best ways to protect your designs so that you end up with a flawless, long-lasting finish.
Plus you will have the ability to learn from wherever you are in a fun, relaxed way, with plenty of opportunity to practice, play and really develop those masking tape design muscles, along with lots of support from me!
Is this course for you?
This course is generally aimed at people who have experience of painting already and don't need help with other aspects of the process of furniture upcycling such as prep.
It’s perfect if you are excited by masking tape design and want to learn to create designs
It’s perfect if you really want to learn how to create the technical type of styles of designs I create
It's perfect if you want to learn how to plan and present your designs professionally
It’s perfect if you are already creating designs with masking tape but perhaps want to take them to the next level in complexity
It's perfect if you want to improve the quality of the finished result you are getting
It's also perfect if you want to come and have a lot of fun with masking tape with me! ;)
Other videos around the prep and painting process are available to you if you do decide to go ahead with this course and you’ve not got that much experience.
However, if you would like to learn the end-to-end furniture upcycling process with me first and get an introduction to masking tape design before diving into the Advanced world check out the Furniture Upcycling Workshop
What to expect on the workshop
As this is a special time, so this is a really special course! Online and live – as much as possible. I won’t necessarily be able to deliver it in this format again in the future with so much live interaction like this, particularly while developing a piece myself!
There will be an introduction session at 7pm on Wednesday 27th May and the course will start fully with the first demo on Sunday 31st May and then for the following 3 Sundays.
There will be a live Q&A interactive call on a Wednesday evening for sharing progress & troubleshooting.
The topics will be:
About Masking Tape Design – including live demo of different techniques & designs, different surfaces and good tools and products to use
Developing designs – live session including a demo of a Drinks Cabinet design being developed and planned and visuals being created.
Applying designs – including a live demo of the design being mapped out created including key techniques for cutting and readying the design for painting
Flawless designs – a live session good techniques for painting, finishes and fixes to ensure your project stays looking good long term with Q&A / troubleshooting.
The course will be run from inside a Facebook Group where we can come together and I can offer you support on your designs as you work on them and drop in any other advice, quick demos and ideas.
You’ll be encouraged to share your versions of the techniques shared, whether on boards or furniture and also to develop a unique design of your own alongside me as I create mine on the Drinks Cabinet.
You can enjoy sharing all this with lovely like-minded folk in a easy-going supportive and fun environment. And that’s not to even mention getting to share those as oh-so-satisfying masking tape reveals after too! ;)
Don’t worry though if you can’t make the sessions live or even work along in real time, as you can watch everything when it suits you and work at your own pace. You can play them back as many times as you like with no limits on long you can access them for too.
Why learn from me?
I have worked out the best techniques over several years of trial and error myself and I want to help to short cut you past all of that and to get to the good stuff more quickly; to simply enjoy creating designs and the pleasure they can bring to you, and if you are selling your pieces, to your customers too.
The workshops are packed with value as I share all my tips, insider info and personally gained experience of creating and selling furniture professionally
I have personally struggled with creative confidence and self-belief and can help you to build your confidence in your work and your ability to create lovely designs
I have to date worked with almost 250 people, teaching them what I've learned, some of whom have moved on to become Professional Furniture Upcyclers themselves.
I have awards from FlipRunway and General Finishes for my technical refinishing skills, which really motivates me to want to share what I do with others who are looking for some help! As I said before, I really learned everything the hardest way so I want to help make things easier for others. That's my mission!
I’ve also been asked to do demonstrations at Grand Designs, Ideal Home Show and the Handmade & Upcycled Market so I'm pretty good at getting up there and showing people things now :)
I am an Associate Member of the House Of Up and an Ambassador for their partnership with the British Institute of Interior Designers and I'm keen to share what I've learned about designing over the years with you!

What you need to participate
in advance of the start you will receive a supplies list of recommended items with my personal choices and some alternative options.
All you need to do is find yourself a piece of furniture to work on or some wooden boards /items with flat surfaces and you can work alongside me and through the week in between our sessions or at your own pace and to suit your own schedule.
Flat surfaces really do help for masking tape work. It's better to choose a wooden piece if you can but I'll talk you through prepping any other types of surfaces in readiness for your designs.
